New Beaches and New Season

There is a lot of discussion about our new beaches. We want you to know this will be a great place to learn about what is happening.

It is widely known now that we are opening a beach on Governors' Island and at the South Street Seaport.

Here are some details.

The Governor's Island (WTB/GI) beach will have a sandy beach area plus a live music venue featuring live bands and other live acts Thurs - Sunday. Many nights will also feature DJs after the band. Come for the band, stay for the view and the DJ. There will be food but we are still working on the final menu. Governor's Island is expected to open the week of July 4th. We have a very special DJ set for July 5th.

The beach at south street seaport (WTB/SSS), will open the week of Memorial Day Weekend. This beach will have a sandy area for food and sunning but it will be smaller than the other locations. This beach will feature some interesting activities. We will have ping pong, Skee ball and Mini Golf (9 holes). We will have a lot of interesting food here, including some seafood. That will include a raw bar on the weekends but we are not planning serving any steamed bi-valves.

The beach at Long Island City (WTB/LIC) will have it's first event on April 18th and 26th with Melting Pot Global. We will have events every weekend in May. Our grand re-opening will be Memorial Day Weekend with a special Louie Vega event on Saturday May 23rd ($20 at the door / $10 in advance). We have DJ events every Thurs through Sunday and most Wednesdays as well. Typically the Thurs door fee will be $5, Friday and Saturday will be $10, and Sunday will vary up to $40. Sundays in July and August are FREE. Unless otherwise announced door fees start at 8pm; Sundays in June & Sept the fee and event starts at 1pm

We have a lot planned for the late summer and fall...

There will be a door charge every Friday Saturday and Sunday and a few Thursday..

However our back and north beach will be open for free access (dogs and soda served)

We are expecting a fresh batch of Black Angus Dogs from Stahl-Meyer.. and as the nights get shorter and the fall air comes our way.. starting Sept 22 or later, if you bring a hoodie, jacket or sweater with you to WTB, you will get a ticket good for a free stahl-meyer black angus beef hot dog. Offer good while supplies last, subject to cancellation or change and limited to adults 21 or over (sorry kids). The ticket is good only on the same day it's given.

At Water Taxi Beach people often ask about getting reservations. Basically we dont' take them, except for our Friday night chicken BBQ.

We also take reservations for private events, which occur when the beach is open but in a private section. They start at $4,000. Here is a look at what you would get if you had 15 people and worked within the min. spending level.

Sound System part II

As we reported earlier in the season that we hired Gary Stewart Audio to build us a system that could play high fidelity music outside without impacting on our neighbors in Queens or Manhattan. The system sounded fantastic with amazing separation and clarity. The results were remarkable and beyond our expectation, the system was also affordable..

However, since Gary created a stereo image by sounding the tent with 32 separate speakers. That meant speakers and sound went off in all directions and we had to keep the volume lower than many of the DJs liked. It sounded great with 30 or 50 people in the tent. But, when a few hundred people where in there, the sound of their voices often seemed louder than the music.

With the The Beach Party approaching and the audience for Turntables On The Hudson growing we felt (mid June) we needed to do something quick to make things better. Of course, anything we would have tried would just be an expensive experiment.

Promoter Benny Soto who has been coming by this summer to help us taste test our now award winning hamburger made a suggestion that we create a wall of sound all facing the same direction.

Gary asked if we were a) willing to give up the great stereo image we had and b) if we were worried it might create too much sound all going in the same direction. We then consulted with Al Fierstein; Al designed the limits on the system so that we could avoid spilling out sound out into the community.

Al like Gary has been involved with the sound of night clubs for more than several decades. There were a lot of emails back and forth among our experts and with many of our DJs, promoters and friends.

In the end, Gary was right that the over all quality of the sound decreased, while at the same time, we were able to make more than a 10 db increase in the sound level on the dance floor.

Al explains, "The flush-mounted speaker wall provides the equivalent of one very large directional speaker array. In most systems, bass sound diffracts around the back of the cabinets and not only is wasted, but also goes in unwanted directions, such as toward the neighbors. With the flush-mounting arrangement, this “rear sound” is not lost and adds to the sound pressure in front of the wall.

Also, because the speaker wall is a long line, it acts like a “line source”. As opposed to a point source, where the sound spreads out and quickly gets dissipated, a line source focuses sound to provide greater bass impact at longer distances. This increases the sweet spot area of the [tent] floor."

The end results was almost too good to believe, although we lost a lot of pure audiophile quality, we BOTH lowered the sonic impact with our neighbors while at the same time making over all system, including the bass sound much louder.

Chicken BBQ

We did free 1/2 BBQ chicken last Sunday (July 6th) and it was a lot of fun so we are doing it again tomorrow (Wednesday July 9th). We open at 4pm, we will have the chicken ready by 5pm. We have three cases of chicken, that's about 240 1/2 chickens.

First come, first serve, good while supplies last.

Tickets are on our web site. We open at Noon. Tables are on a first come basis. We recommend people bring beach chairs and/or blankets and towels. If you love the sun come early otherwise about 5 or 6pm. With any ticket there is free parking.

However two important points...

#2 If you park you can't leave until 11pm and/or until the streets are clear

It's Not Loud

After 3 years of using various and miscellaneous sound equipment NY Water Taxi and Water Taxi Beach made the decision to upgrade the sound system. We wanted to put in a system that would be neighborhood friendly yet would be of high enough quality for the world class DJs who play here.

We are pleased to reveal for our grand opening our new GSA Out Door system. GSA typically designs systems for Nightclubs. The system they designed and custom built for us, was designed to be community friendly.

The system is very clear and extra clean, meaning the sound that we create doesn't have a lot of static and noise in it; we didn't want to waste our sonic output on sound we didn't need. Water Taxi Beach is NOT a club and this isn't a club system; it doesn't get very loud and it has been limited based on testing within the community (15 locations) so that the sound you hear at the beach, stays at the beach.

The system includes two speakers on the beach, two DJ monitors, two tweeter arrays, eight coaxial speakers and eight sub woofers. The system has a time delay so that the sound on the beach matches the sound in the tent. The system uses Crown Amplifiers.

We Won!!

Wow, what a day... lots of rain clouds but a real silver lining... at the 1st Borough Battle of Burgers, against pretty much the top competition in NYC, Water Taxi Beach won the best burger. We served our Motz Burger more or less as is here at the beach. The only exception, being that I personally cooked each burger with two assistants; that's a lot of TLC.

Now, if you are thinking about coming to the beach for a burger, please understand that a) we only make them on weekends and b) we only grind a small amount of meat each day, so supplies are limited, please come early if you want a burger!!

Now, some important thanks.. to our pit crew today.. Robbie and Miguel and to Andy for holding down the fort while we were cooking (and eating up a storm in Astoria!!). Thanks for George Motz for his help in designing the burger for us. Also, Pat... we love your MEAT!! For those in the know, all the great burger shops in NYC use meat from Pat LaFrieda.

While most use the most excellent Pat LaFrieda blend (Chuck & Brisket) we just get whole chucks and grind our own, fresh just before service... which is what we did tonight.

Water Taxi's to Water Taxi Beach

Water Taxi Beach is about to enter it's 4th season. Each season has been unique and wonderful. However, the biggest disappointment is often when we tell customers that taking a water taxi to Water Taxi Beach isn't always possible.

For the 2008 season, this is going to change. There will be two different ways to take a water taxi to the beach.

First:
There is the Hop on/ Hop Off service. This is regular scheduled ferry service that will run through the summer. This service runs 7 days a week.

It typically starts mid morning and end about 7 or 8 pm. In 2007 the service arrived at Water Taxi Beach on an hourly basis. There are 4 fare zones.

From E. 34th St, the fare is $5
From any other location, the fare is $10
$20 buys an unlimited one day pass
$25 buys an unlimited two day pass

Second
On Friday nights from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend, there will be a special shuttle that will run continuously from East 34th St and Water Taxi Beach (Hunter's Point).

It will start approx. at 9:15 pm. It will end at midnight on Friday and 1am on Saturday. The round trip fare is $10.

Robert Lin

NYC is great not only because of the things you can do but because of the people you meet. When I first came to NYC one of the first people I met was then a student at NYU. A few years later I was a grad student there myself.

By then my friend Robert Lin was appearing in all sorts of off, off, off Broadway Shows... (maybe I need to throw in a few more off's), and doing some voice over work.

A few years later he was working in the movies. He is always very selective about the scripts he picks. He is now in China preparing for his next role. News about his latest work is here.

Waterfall Tours

Vegan Picnic Options

We are proud to announce we are expanding our catering options to include a vegan/vegetarian menu. This menu is available to anyone selecting our party options #1 or #2.

For the 2008 Season, Water Taxi Beach is proud to be offering organic and vegan picnic option. Each menu is created from seasonal and sustainable ingredients as well as regional staples like potatoes and pasta. Chef Mateo of 4 Course Vegan worked with us to create this special menu. Custom menu’s are available including raw vegan and organic meats.

Our organic and vegan picnic consists of 2 appetizers, a garden salad, a pasta salad and a potato salad along with 2 entrée’s, 3 sides and Dark Chocolate Macaroons plus several dessert options.

For groups who are ordering from any of our other menu’s but wish to have some vegan options can order from this menu for their group on an ala carte basis. These dishes are not available at our food court.

At water taxi beach we have always taken pride in welcoming whole families. As part of that policy we have always allowed parents to be accompanied at Water Taxi Beach by their minor children. However, effective this weekend on each Saturday Night at 8pm we will no longer be able to allow this.

We appologise for any distruptions this may cause in your family routine and hope to welcome you at Water Taxi Beach on other nights.

Grandmaster Flash

We would like to think that WTB is itself a legend in the making. We also like to think that we have developed some really unique creativity on the NY water front. But we are truly humble this week as we prepare to welcome Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Grandmaster Flash.

Born into the tail end of the baby-boomer generation, and an immigrant to America, Joseph Saddler aka Grandmaster Flash helped define a music genre that today defines contemporary American music. He is also credited with inventing "cutting" a turntable technique which is at the very core of turntableism. Turntableism is the difference between a DJ who just plays songs and a DJ artist who uses the turnable to perform.

Cutting is a method of looping a "track" using two identical phonograph records as sources, two turn tables to play the records and a mixer to switch between the two sources; using this setup a turn table artist plays the track on the 1st turntable, and then on the 2nd turntable using the mixer to seamlessly switch between the two. While the 2nd source is playing the DJ artist manually reverses the other source. By repeating this technique a skilled DJ artist can play the same track continuously. It's a lot of work and it requires good manual dexterity. Today of course, its' very easy to do with computers.

Grandmaster Flash will be performing this Saturday, July 28th 2007, as a special guest at The Beach Party. Cover is $3. ID is required for all admissions.

Thursday night we go Latin; world beats dripping with Latin Rhythm; different parties every Thurs.

Friday nights mixed it up. On Friday July 20th DJ jo jo Flash spins Freestyle. ($3 cover)

The Beach Party happens every Saturday. It kicks off with a pre-recorded set and then a live set from opening Act DJ Victor Franco. At 8pm Beach Party residents Justin Carter and the Brothers' Brothers' spin with their friends and with an amazing headliner every week ($3 cover)

Saturday in the Summer at Water Taxi Beach is our biggest music event.

All afternooon from 2pm til 8pm, we get the music of Victor Franco. DJ / Producer / Remixer Victor Franco has made remixes and productions for many record labels including Virgin Records, Mercury Records, Sony Latin, Robbins Ent. and Strictly Rhythm just to name a few.

Victor will be playing a wide mix of cool tracks ... mostly dance music from Lounge to Progressive House ... maybe even a little Electro. Sometimes he'll slow it down with some Chill Out or Classic Hip Hop for a change of pace.

If there is some song that has been playing every 30 minutes on a commericial radio station, he wont be playing it.

When Victor stops at 8pm, it's time for The Beach Party... every Saturday night this Summer!

There are some questions about our ID policy. You need to be 21 or older with proper ID to enter. The NYS Liquor Authority allows us to accept a photo ID from any US state or territory. We can also accept US Military IDs and valid passports.

Expired US driver's licenses are not allowed. (Expired = not valid).

- Non US driver's licenses and national identity cards (non U.S.) are NOT valid proof of ID. If you do not have a US drivers license or Mil. ID, you need to bring your PASSPORT.

Parents who are 21 or older and have valid ID are allowed to be accompanied by their minor children. We welcome families (parents with valid ID and their children) at all times.

This year WTB will have some small door charges. Typically from $3 to $5. This will be on 10 weekends from June 29th until Labor day. We are always free admission before 8pm. The exception is July 4th when admission is $25 through the day.

On June 9th, Saturday at 8pm we are holding a Vegan dinner with underground chef Matteo. Chef Matteo and other speakers will present a lecture and food cooking demonstration. The food features all organic regional produce. We will also be serving organic wines and Orlio Organic Beer, a new organic beer company from the makers of Magic Hat.

Beer Soap Opera

We opened WTB in 2005 with the idea we would sell 24 oz PBR cans. They come from a different brewery than the 12 oz cans.

So we couldn't get the 24 oz cans for most of the season and then we got them in.. and finished 2005 with them.

In 2006, we switched to 100% keg beer. PBR was at that point NOT legally available in Queens. You could get it in Brooklyn and Manhattan but NOT Queens.. Yes, NYS alcohol laws are so very interesting...

So in 2006, we switched to Schaefer beer. It's made by the same company that makes PBR and it's a personal favorite. We (the Water Taxi) also stops at the Schaefer landing area (south side Williamsburg) in Brooklyn... so it seemed like a good fit.

Now, as we approach 2007, we assumed we would be selling Schaefer again. However, PBR is now available in Queens. After much careful thought and deliberation, we have decided once again to switch things up and this year, 2007, we will be selling DRAFT PBR!!

Beach Grows in Brooklyn?

Tom Fox CEO of NY Water Taxi has been working on a proposal for a beach in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood. Located at Atlantic Basin it would include a new High School, workspace for artists, historical ships, a new home for the Water Taxi fleet, a park area and a beach.

yes, the Winter hasn't started and yes and we are fast at work planning out the 2007 beach season.

We hope to book a few Weddings in May and June of '06

The major summer weekends (July & August) will be filled with an assortment of DJs spin music from around the region and the world. We expect Saturday nights in the summer to feature our ReBound Party.

There are two easy truism for NYC residents; they love food and they love film. The question is do they love film about food?

We think the answer is YES, especially if they can taste some of the food that's appearing up on the silver screen! We are going to try to host NYC's first annual Food Film Festival.

Because we want to cook some of the food that will be shown, we have to spread out the festival over 3 different weekends. Our current plans are to do two of them in June and the last one in September.

Since we don't know anyone else who knows more about food and flim, the series will be curated by documentary filmmakerGeorge Motz.

So what food will be be cooking? Well, we are not going to try to make every item from every film we show. In fact we are not even going to try to make an item from every film. One weekend we will cook regional American burgers, one weekend we will do southern style BBQ and the 3rd weekend is still up grabs, depending on what movies we can book.

We are working out the details to have Robert Richter run the smoker. He is a NYC based competion BBQer and the Pitmaster and consultant for Hill Country BBQ. He has already guest chef'd at Water Taxi Beach. If we can work out the details he will produce 3 days of lip smacking goodness!

It's been a very eventful weekend. The most interesting part is that the weather man has been wrong in our favor. Don't that we didn't have some rain but not a long and not any yesterday from open to close...

That doesn't mean there still isn't some on the way... Although we are about to open up for Sunday there is still the threat of some mid day thunderstorms… it's also Sunny and 75 degrees warm!

Yesterday we put up the Western and Northern side walls of our Tent.. so we are, more than ever, ready to weather any storm...

Yesterday was small fry compared to our more "busy" Saturday’s in the "heat' of the summer… but it was notable. We had many people who came after 10pm to hear and dance to our DJ. Included in that group was Jon and Mark from Pukka; it was nice to see them hang out w/ out having to "spin."

Of course they will be here in a few hours to spin the afternoon and night away!

"...Then it was Sunday, bright and shining, and the non–dietary goal of my visit was at hand. The MTA's line 7 trundled westwards towards Manhattan but I got off at Long Island City for the walk to the near–mythical Water Taxi Beach. It was everything I'd dreamed – ratlands, etc..."

Wow,

It's been such a busy summer I haven't had much of a chance to Blog... but here is a bit of a round up..

6 mentions this summer in the NY Times, plus 4 weeks in a row in Time Out Mag, and lots of other TV and print coverage has started to actually put us on the Map. A burger event with Gothamist/A Hamburger Today and a kids breakfast and Rock Out Concert with TONY Kids were the too big highlights..

ReBound, our party on Saturday Night has also been a big hit.. We can't mention the party in LIC that gets you all WARM before you come over to cool down at ReBound.. but with the 4k to 7k people who attend that day time party checking out the modern art and so forth it's been really easy to get lots of people to check us out. Doug Singer has been doing a great job putting together a hot world class list of DJs and every one has been totally chill. Hangout music til 11pm and then it really kicks in.. We serve until 3am on Saturday..

The Motz Burger is Harry's at Water Taxi Beach's entry into the mythical "Great American Hamburger Contest" that plays out nightly across this great land at very burger joint, shack, and of course Brooklyn's Schnack. It's submitted for your approval... On June 24th we will get our Yea's and Nay's from NYC burger-ratia. Give your own taste buds a spin and then let us know what you think.

The Motz Burger is a 1/4 lbs of 100% Certified Black Angus Chuck. The meat is ground fresh daily; we make a GUESS each day and produce only a LIMITED quantity. Any meat that isn't used up by close of business on the day it was ground will never be born as Motz Burger. We use it to make our Coney Sauce.

Our QBQ BBQ Burger Bash, will use the Motz Burger as a template for the BQB burgers, so while many of the inspiring burgers are bigger than 1/4 lb, our homage burgers will be exactly 1/4 lb each.

Question #2: What if I don't have a ticket?

On June 17th the 1st Wedding we are catering at the beach will start at 5pm. The Big Yellow tent, the site of the wedding along with a tiny bit of the sand in front of it will be closed for the day until about 11pm.

In the event of bad weather the beach will be closed.

We want to clafify our happy hour...

Now that we have Schaefer, replacing the non available PBR, our happy hour special is from 3pm to 6pm for up to 2 KEGS worth of Schaefer (that's 200 cups worth or 3,200 ounces!). We blow the air horn when we start and we blow it again when it's gone...

(yes we will most likly switch back to PBR when it's available in Kegs in Queens...)

In terms of MEAT, or Elk product for this weekend has landed!

There are a lot of stars that have to come into alignment for the beach to come to life each year. It's hard to believe but we have been planning the 2006 since just a few weeks after the 2005 season closed.

But the hard work started in late Jan 2006 when we put a full time team back on the project. We expect my early May have 6-8 employees (full time equivalent) pushing things forward.

The warm days of summer and those cooling "river" breezes have given way to the chill nights of Autumn and, for now, the beach has closed.

Thanks to everyone who came from the boats, LIC and beyond... When you see us make sure you say hi!

10 to 15 degree cooler in the summer makes 90 degree days a nice 75 but 50 at the beach in the Fall could easily be 44 and that's way to cold!

a few big events.. Murray Hill on Oct 6th and our end of season party for the American Cancer Society on Oct 10th. Our last day. That event will be from 2pm until we run out of stuff! Suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 for kids and $1 for wee ones..

Sept 21st, this Wednesday, will be the last Wednesday we will be open this season.

For the remainder of the season we will be open 4 days a week (Thurs to Sunday).

We will be open Monday Oct 10th. From 2pm until "we run out of stuff." We will be holding a benefit on Monday Oct 10th for the American Cancer Society ACS.

There will be no charge for any thing at the beach as we will be clearly out all our "inventory" of food and drink.

There is a suggested donation of $10 for adults, $5 for children and $1 for babies.
